One Year Later
Almost one year ago, something extraordinary happened.
Because of the generosity of our community, Northside Youth & Senior Service Center was able to replace its aging transportation fleet, ensuring that older adults and adults with disabilities across the City of St. Louis could continue getting where they need to go safely, reliably, and with dignity.

A year later, we continue to see the impact every single day.
Yet numbers alone can never tell the full story.
The real impact is found in the faces of the seniors stepping onto one of our vans for a doctor’s appointment, a trip to the grocery store, or lunch with friends. It’s the relief of an adult daughter who knows her mother won’t miss dialysis because she no longer drives. It’s the confidence that comes from knowing independence doesn’t have to end simply because someone can no longer get behind the wheel.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll introduce you to many of those stories.
Transportation Is More Than a Ride
For many older adults, losing the ability to drive can feel like losing a part of their independence.
Suddenly, everyday activities become major obstacles.

- Medical appointments become difficult.
- Prescriptions go unfilled.
- Grocery shopping becomes a challenge.
- Church attendance declines.
- Social connections begin to fade.
Without dependable transportation, isolation grows, health suffers, and independence slowly slips away.
That’s where Northside steps in.
Every ride reconnects someone to their doctor, pharmacy, grocery store, faith community, senior center, family, and neighborhood.
Transportation isn’t simply about getting from Point A to Point B.
It’s about helping people continue living the lives they love.

The Numbers Tell a Powerful Story
Using our current service levels, Northside is on pace to provide approximately:
🚐 More than 8,600 transportation rides this year
Helping older adults and adults with disabilities reach:
- Medical appointments
- Dialysis treatments
- Physical therapy
- Pharmacies
- Grocery stores
- Community resources
- Congregate meal sites
- Social and wellness activities
But transportation is only one part of the picture
Because riders remain connected to our broader network of services, Northside is also projected to provide annually:
🥗 More than 120,000 nutritious meals through Meals on Wheels, congregate dining, and emergency nutrition.
📋 More than 3,300 hours of case management, helping seniors access benefits, healthcare, housing assistance, and critical community resources.
🥤 More than 7,600 Ensure nutrition supplements, helping older adults maintain strength, improve nutrition, and recover from illness.
💻 More than 130 computer class participants, helping bridge the digital divide so seniors can communicate with family, access healthcare, and remain connected.
👥 Services reaching well over 700 older adults and adults with disabilities, many of whom rely on Northside multiple times each week.

More Than Transportation
Reliable transportation creates a ripple effect throughout our community.
When seniors can safely reach medical appointments, they are healthier.
When they can shop for groceries, they eat better.
When they remain socially connected, loneliness decreases.
When they can age safely at home, families experience less stress and caregivers can remain in the workforce.
Every ride helps reduce costly emergency room visits, delays institutional care, strengthens neighborhoods, and keeps public dollars circulating within our local economy.
Transportation doesn’t simply move people.
It protects independence.
It preserves dignity.
It strengthens communities.

The Stories Behind the Wheel
Over the coming weeks, we’ll introduce you to some remarkable people.
You’ll meet seniors who once believed they would never attend church again until a Northside driver pulled into their driveway.
You’ll hear from riders who no longer worry about missing life-saving medical treatments.
You’ll see grandparents reconnecting with family and friends after months—even years—of isolation.
You’ll also meet the incredible drivers who greet riders by name, ask about their grandchildren, celebrate birthdays, and often become trusted friends along the journey.
These are the stories statistics can never fully capture.
