At the Big Game Officials Junior Academy, the basketball court becomes a workplace and every game becomes an opportunity to learn.
Created through a partnership between Northside Youth and Senior Service Center and Big Game Officials, the Academy helps young people gain paid work experience while developing skills they can carry into any career.
Learning Through Real Responsibility
Academy participants are trained to officiate youth basketball games. That responsibility requires much more than learning the rules.
Young officials must arrive on time, dress professionally, communicate clearly and make decisions under pressure. They also learn how to manage disagreements, accept feedback, work with others and remain composed in challenging situations.
These are the same qualities employers expect in the workplace.
Through training, mentorship and actual officiating assignments, participants build skills in:
- Communication and teamwork
- Leadership and decision-making
- Time management and dependability
- Conflict resolution
- Professionalism and accountability
- Money management and financial responsibility

Paid Experience With Lasting Value
The Big Game Officials Junior Academy is not simply a basketball program. It is a youth employment and workforce-development initiative delivered through a setting young people already understand and enjoy.
Participants do not just practice employability skills in a classroom. They put those skills to work in real situations, serve their community and earn money for their efforts.
For many participants, the Academy provides an introduction to employment, a first supervisor, a first paycheck and an early opportunity to discover the value of being prepared and dependable.
After successfully completing their training, participants can begin earning $30 per game as youth basketball officials. This provides young people with meaningful income while allowing them to apply their new skills in an actual work environment.
